Warigami (April 2019)

Wendy Ohata has just made three startling realizations: One, she has a twin brother named Vincent. Two, she’s a kami-jin – a descendent of an ancient Japanese people who can turn paper into deadly weapons. And three, there’s a kami-jin warrior named Sadako hunting her down for reasons she doesn’t understand. (official synopsis)

We were commissioned to create an animated sequence that would tell the contradictory origins of the kami-jin order. By using the tactile texture of paper and looking to the style of Tokugawa-era Japanese artwork, we folded and unfolded people, weapons and the world itself to depict the story as Wendy and Sadako argue over the true history of how these origami warriors came to be. Guided by the artful vision of director Jason Lapeyre, we crafted a moody but slightly comical segment that will act as a narrative aside to this action packed martial arts series.
